Favorite Albums: Nevermind by Nirvana

nevermind-nirvana.jpgNevermind was Nirvana’s first major label album released under David Geffen Records.  The album kickstarted a huge wave of band signings in the Seattle area after it hit #1 back in 1991.

I loved listening to this album.  It was thick, energetic, incredibly melodic and featured Kurt Cobain’s unintelligible singing.   The first single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” became unexpectedly popular and catapulted the band to superstar status.

It was around this time every other guy I knew wanted to be a rocker.  People were growing their hair long and wearing those silly logging town flannels.  And every garage band that opened shows sang incoherent lyrics over amateur musicianship.  It was both a sad and exciting time.  Bands were getting deals all over the place.

The album owned #17 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, despite only getting three stars out of five when the magazine reviewed it originally in 1991.  Everybody loves a winner. :)
